MENS SECTION 2008 SEASON
MATCH REPORTS

HOTHAM AWAY LEAGUE SUNDAY 11 MAY 2008

This is always a difficult fixture for Bognor. So it proved again. It was a hot day and some mixed fortunes on the green. Jack Paiges rink trailed throughout and no great surprise that they lost 16-25. Bob Heys boys were also under the cosh for the most part despite coming back to 1 shot down in the second quarter. But again fell foul 17-26. On Ron Gardners rink it was a different story . The first quarter went the way of Tony Sayers 6-2 but a revival saw Ron's boys pull ahead 12- 8 and maintain their lead at the end of the third 14-12 only to see Tony take the lead with two ends to go. A defiant last end saw the boys rescue a draw with a tight measure. Arthur Richardsons rink however despite being down 4-5 first quarter they pulled ahead and stayed ahead throughout and won well 21-15. The final score 84-72 Hotham so 3 points Bognor. Well done – A difficult game out of the way.

CRABLANDS HOME LEAGUE WED 14TH MAY 2008

Another hot day at Waterloo Square and the visit of relegated Crablands. Always a nice fixture between two friendly clubs. This proved to be a very tight game and one where either side could have won 10-nil. Good performances all round here. Peter Lillfords makeshift team were real heroes with Bill Dibley and Eddy Hoskins late changes proving to be real stars. They led all the way and won 20-15. Narrowly losing top rink by one shot to Bob Heys rink which ran out 24-18 to a good Ron Eastland rink. Not Quite so lucky were Arthur Richardsons boys who would have won had it not been for two loose ends. Finally losing 18-24. And lastly John Parrys men who bravely came back to 17-17 at the end of the 3rd quarter but just faded in the final 6 ends to lose 20-22 . So this narrow defeat helped Bognor to 6 Points. Our first win and best performance so far. Well done lads.

FIRST MATCH 30TH APRIL LEAGUE V WORTHING AT BEECHOUSE PARK

In the last two seasons Worthing have not been the force that they proved to be this year. Newly promoted and with 11 new players all starting in the 16 . So it proved to be a difficult and early on looked as though we would be whitewashed falling behind on all rinks. However as tea approached at ten ends we fought back and all looked to be set fair at least on 3 rinks. However as all things change after tea whilst two rinks held their own Ron Fridays rink lost their way and sunk without trace. Ron Gardners rink had a bad day all round and had no real highlights throughout. The good news was that Tom Gaskins rink flew the flag and came through as our only winning rink adding to their already full stationery supplies. It looked like we were going to plunder 4 points but Arthur Richardsons rink almost managed to clutch defeat from the jaws of victory losing 5 shots on the last two ends and just held out for a draw.

The overall points tally was 3 against 7 and the score less eventful 71 Bognor, 94 Worthing.

The rain held off for the most part but a biting wind made the game less enjoyable. It was still good to be back in the open air again. Bad luck Bognor.
Verdict- Must Improve.

MATCH 2 FRIENDLY V NORFOLK AT HOME SAT 3RD MAY 2008

It was a nice day at the Square , a little cold but very playable. A strong Norfolk team turned up determined to get the better of their seaside neighbours. And they did just that . Apart from a creditable performance by Peter Lillfords stout men on rink 6 the rest of the team sunk without trace. There was some early promise across the board but it quickly wilted under the pressure of some good Norfolk play who handled the cold conditions and an awkward green better than we did.

The result was a resounding defeat on all rinks 56 to 97. So we are all in need of practice.

Verdict- Must do better- and fast.

Bad luck Bognor
