Bognor Regis Bowls Club
Another season has come and gone! How we all looked forward to bowling in the sun-shine at the start of April 2012 and yes the sun shone, the green managed to finally come together although passing through the green at the end of March we did wonder whether it would be fit to play but, give the groundsmen their due Waterloo Square looked resplendent and we were pleasantly surprised at how well the green responded to our tentative play on opening day.
We had some good games when the weather was equally warm and the sun shone BUT not for long. Once more we huddled under wet suits and wondered whether matches would be on or off with numerous phone calls being made to the Captain of the day. To be honest most games were played with few cancellations, we are after all a very hardy lot here at Waterloo Square.
On reflection Bognor Bowls Club has had a very good 2012 season with the men staying mid table in the First and Third Division of the Littlehampton Gazettee League and the ladies staying in the First Division of the C & M League.
As a Mixed Club we entered the Holbrook Cup and Midhurst Cup Competitions and managed to reach and win both finals and were delighted to walk away with both Cups at our first attempt, beating Liphook in the Midhurst Cup and Petworth in the Holbrook Cup. We must at this stage give thanks to both Midhurst and Stedham bowling clubs for their very generous hospitality and welcome on finals day.
Our Finals Weekend planed out and we waited with trepidation for the weather but we didn't need to worry! The sun shone for two whole days. Competitors and spectators were bathed in sun shine all day long. Spectators were treated to excellent matches with lots of oohs and aahs, and much clapping. It almost seemed a shame when it was all over.
But the season is not yet over! We still have two weeks to go, so come on everone, put your name down for the next few finals games, enjoy yourselves before we all head indoors and relearn the green all over again!
